Sunday, Feb. 26: Bias, binary thinking, and white privilege

miki soos logoWe will continue our White Privilege conversation this Sunday (Feb. 26th) with consideration of bias and the notion of binary thinking.

If you would like to prepare, use the following link to complete the implicit bias activity. If you do not have access to a computer and would like to give it a try, we will have a laptop at the cottage on Sunday that you can use.

We will meet Sunday at 4 p.m. at Riverside Salem Environmental Cottage, 3449 West River Rd, Grand Island 14072.  Everyone is welcome.  Potluck to follow.

*What the BLEEP Do We (K)now!*

miki soos logoJoin us Sunday, 05Feb17, to watch a DVD titled “What the BLEEP Do We (K)now!” The makers of the film describe their work  as “science and spirituality come together in this mind-bending trip down the rabbit hole.”

And this from the cover: Embark on a life-changing journey with Amanda (Marlee Matlin), a divorced photographer who tumbles down a metaphysical rabbit hole.  Her mind-bending voyage through the worlds of science and spirituality includes revelations by quantum physics experts, playful animation, and even a conversation with a wise, 35,000-year-old being.  Ultimately, Amanda’s perception of reality is turned inside out and the meaning of life becomes clear.  See for yourself why this groundbreaking movie became one of the most compelling and talked about films of the year 2004. A genuinely upbeat movie with big questions and hopeful answers.

We meet from 4 to 6 p.m. (+ potluck) at the Environmental Cottage, 3449 West River Road, Grand Island, NY 14072.  ALL WELCOME!

This Sunday, 29Jan.17, we will read spiritual biographies re: White Privilege

miki soos logoThis Sunday (29January17) we again take up the topic of White Privilege. We will look at the idea through the spiritual biographies (through the lens of race) of some of the leaders of the UCC. We will reflect on their experience and talk about our own. There will be opportunities for reflection, creativity and sharing. Come prepared to join in the discussion.

Two weeks ago we started this series and reflected on what we mean by the phrase “White Privilege.” Here is one definition:

White privilege (or white skin privilege) is a term for societalprivileges that benefit people identified as white in Western countries, beyond what is commonly experienced by non-whitepeople under the same social, political, or economic circumstances.

jane elliottWe viewed a video of the work done by Jane Elliott around the idea of difference and racism.

Another video about the work of Jane Elliott, longer than the one we showed at the Cottage but even more compelling, is available here:

Finally, we did the Power Flower exercise. Here is a link to the exercise:

We hope you will join us! 4:00 – 6:00. As always, pot-luck to follow.

— Cathy Rieley-Goddard, co-pastor

Activist Brian Nowak will speak on *for a more perfect union*

miki soos logoPlease join us on Sunday, Jan. 22, from 4 to 6 p.m. (+ potluck) to hear from Brian Nowak about the 501c4 he’s working on called “For A More Perfect Union” that is working to bring together people under the banner of immigration reform, economic justice, and protection of civil liberties (among other issues).
