El Nuevo Camino UCC

Jose ClaudioPastor Jose Claudio will be at the cottage on Sunday, January 9, 2011 to tell us about the new open and affirming Hispanic ministry that is taking root on Buffalo’s west side. The new congregation is part of Pilgrim St. Luke’s UCC on Richmond Avenue. They have already been featured in the news with their live nativity and caroling events in the weeks leading up to Christmas. This congregation is the first and only open and affirming Hispanic congregation in Upstate New York. Jose will talk to us about how the ministry got started, how he hopes it will grow and how Riverside Salem can support them along the way. We’ll have some singing and sharing along the way.

Please join us at the Riverside Salem Environmental Cottage, 3449 West River Road, Grand Island. We gather at 4:00 PM for a couple of hours followed by a potluck supper. All are welcome!

Merry Christmas!

With Christmas around the corner and the Winter Solstice just days away, Nan Hoffman and her friends must be ready to lead us with songs and stories. Join us on Sunday, December 19, at 4:00 PM. The cottage will be warm and ready for everyone to join our annual celebration. We will sing songs of the season — some you know, some will be new.  Bring your voice and a dish to share. It will be a great time!

December 12 — Join us!

Rachel Carson has been called the patron saint of the modern environmental movement. A quiet biologist who shook the world with her revelations about America’s use of pesticides in the years following World War II, Carson has been named by Time Magazine as one of the 100 most influential people of the 20th century. Of her book Silent Spring, Al Gore wrote, “Without this book, the environmental movement might have been long delayed or never developed at all.”

The documentary-style film A Sense Of Wonder takes the form of two interviews with Rachel Carson during the last year of her life, as she battles cancer and her critics in the wake of publishingSilent Spring. Using the author’s own writings as the basis for the film, writer and actress Kaiulani Lee provides an intimate glimpse of Carson as she is thrust into the role of controversial public figure.

Watch A Sense of Wonder with us this Sunday, December 12th, from 4-6 p.m. at Riverside-Salem Environmental Cottage, 3449 West River Road, Grand Island.  Potluck following.  All welcome.

Directions from Buffalo:  I-190 N over S Grand Island bridge to Exit 19, “Whitehaven Road.”  Left/west on Whitehaven about 2.2 miles to West River Road.  Right/north on West River about 9/10 mile to 3449, cabin in wooded area.  Parking along road – one side in winter/snow, please.

December 5 at the Cottage

YYN, which stands for YES! YES! NO!  Survival skills in this soul-killling age: Humor and Rebellion on the Road to Liberation, a peek into the absurdities of existence, the dire necessity to deflect despair, and to emerge from the cocoons of fear I/we create and fight for the future. I’ll have a few new poems to read (and maybe he’ll talk about his autobiographical writing?).

Chuck suggests I describe him this way:  My friend of long lopsided standing, occasionally flopping to the challenge and flounderinmg around in hellish punitudery,,,but thus far fortunate to resurface and refurbish his shaky soul. (At the very least.)

4-6 p.m. Sunday at The Cottage, 3449 West River Road, Grand Island; potluck following.
