Native American creation stories with Nancy Johnson

Miki Sos logo This Sunday — 31May15 — we will consider creation stories.

Our speaker, Nancy Johnson, is an Onondaga Snipe. She graduated from Native American studies at UB with a Master’s degree and also a law degree. She is co-founder of Indigenous Women’s Initiatives (IWI) and is founder and coordinator of The Seed Institute, a project of IWI and Riverside-Salem. She also is a member of the organizing committee for World On Your Plate.

Nancy’s husband, Bill Johnson, is a member of the Cahuilla Band of Indians from California. The last time she visited, she obtained a CD of the Cahuilla creation story, very beautifully told by his aunt, Catherine Sauble, who worked tirelessly to preserve the Cahuilla language and culture. The CDis a recording of a California public radio show. Nancy will share that Cahuilla Creation story, and as well, perhaps,  the Onondaga creation story.

Join us in this special opportunity to understand and compare our cultural/historical ideas about Creation.
